Cloth diapers or cotton diapers’ also sometimes referred to as "terry towelling diapers" are what you may regard as the old, ‘traditional diaper’, which you yourself probably benefited from, when you were a baby. This was the way your mom did it and the way it was done by moms, for probably hundreds of years. |
And you can’t help thinking, perhaps, ‘moms DO know best’ because there has been a lot of controversy regarding the ‘throw away society’ and the problem of land fill site because of the large increase in dumping the disposable diaper!
Diaper actually refers to the material type, in the past usually of linen, in the UK they are generally referred to as, ‘nappies’ being a shortened version of the word ‘napkins’. In the United States, ‘Pampers’ is often commonly used as the ‘generic’ word for diaper.
Reasons why disposable diapers are so popular.
Disposable diapers can be argued to be perhaps ‘healthier’ and can be more convenient, they also, of course, do away with the need of ‘laundering’ as being the case of the cloth diaper.
Things against the disposable diaper, is that they are increasingly filling up dumps and landfill sites. They are, also when compared with cloth diapers, a lot more costly.
The main time saving aspect is the basic one, and that is, do you simply throw away the problem or do you launder the item and reuse it many times? This is the perceived ‘convenience aspect’, when comparing the two types of diaper.
Cloth diapers result in sooner potty training.
It is also considered by many that the child is more quickly ‘toilet trained’, because they become more uncomfortable after ‘elimination’ because of the feeling, either of wet or dirty, this more rapidly results in the awareness that leads to the child asking to use the toilet or the potty.
Modern cloth diapers are more user friendly having fastenings or Velcro to make them easier in use. There are now businesses in many larger town or city area’s set up solely to provide a laundry service for cloth diapers. You place the soiled items in a sealed container and the laundry business calls and collects them on a regular basis and delivers the cleaned items for use that week. Such cloth diaper service is invaluable to the mom who needs the convenience of someone else doing the laundry, and yet cares about the environment and the pressure on the ‘disposable diaper’ issue.
