Within hours of the birth of your baby, you will be asked by the hospital staff for your permission for them to give your newly born baby Vitamin K. This is an essential medication which is to prevent a potentially serious bleeding condition known as, "haemorrhagic disease of the newborn". This is a very rare condition, but it can be life threatening. Most hospitals now administer the medication orally as soon as possible after birth. |
Breastfeeding needs further supplements.
If you are breastfeeding your baby,he or she, will need two further doses of the K Vitamin, at about 7 days old and again at 28 days, old. These will most probably be administered by your 'midwife', in her routine visit to your home. 'Infant Formula' fed Babies already have added K Vitamin. Formula or Bottle fed babies however only have to have the first dose at birth, because the formula milk already contains small amounts of vitamin K.
